Following the outbreak of war between the United States and Great Britain in June 1812, Sackets Harbor became the center of American naval and military activity for the upper St. Lawrence Valley and Lake Ontario. Today, Sackets Harbor visitors can experience Battlefield exhibits, guided and self-guided tours, a restored 1850's Navy Yard and Commandant's House, live reenactments, and much more.
Sackets Harbor was involved in two battles in the War of 1812, and over 3,000 men were stationed there. This sprawling site covers 70 acres of park-like land including open fields, a landscaped tree grove, and Navy Yard.
Once the private home of a prominent local family during the mid-nineteenth century, the Pickering-Beach Museum artifact collection and guided, interpretive tours offer visitors a glimpse of what village life was like in early Sackets Harbor.
Visit the former army post to see architectural gems from 1816 to the present, a rare War of 1812 earthen works, and broad lawns where troops once paraded and played polo. Apartments and condos are available for rent.
